# Azure Queue Storage

Canonical: https://inetgeek.com/queues/azure-queue-storage/

Microsoft's managed queue, billed per 10,000 operations with queued messages charged as stored data.

## Who it suits

Azure-resident systems that want a queue billed like storage — operations plus depth, no plan to choose and no capacity to provision.

Consider something else if Queued messages are billed as stored data, so a backlog costs money by the gigabyte-month, and there is no free allowance at all where SQS gives a million requests a month.

## iScore

54 / 100 (80% interval 45–63), rank 10 of 10 in queues — interval overlaps the next rank, so this is an ordering, not a finding.

inetGeek's own reading, computed from sourced facts against category peers by disclosed rules. Not a provider claim. Intervals are 80%; a provider with few documented facts is pulled toward the category middle rather than scored on what little is known.
Read this score with care:
- Capacity and limits is thin: 2 of 5 criteria are scored, so it sits near the category middle with a wide interval (46–58). Read the interval, not the point.
- Capabilities is thin: 0 of 1 criteria are scored, so it sits near the category middle with a wide interval (4–100). Read the interval, not the point.
- Trust and compliance is thin: 4 of 12 criteria are scored, so it sits near the category middle with a wide interval (48–79). Read the interval, not the point.
- Adoption is thin: 0 of 1 criteria are scored, so it sits near the category middle with a wide interval (10–90). Read the interval, not the point.
- Documented but not scored, because the page states it as text with no comparable number or a yes/limited/no (a one-time, usage-based or other-vendor price, or a per-site choice): max_delay, uptime_sla. Read them on the provider page; the score neither rewards nor penalises what it could not compare.

### Pricing

- Free tier: No ([source](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/storage/queues/), read 2026-09-13)
- Kind of free offer: Free credit ([source](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/storage/queues/), read 2026-09-13)
- What the free plan includes: $200 of Azure credit for 30 days on a new account; no standing Queue Storage allowance is published. ([source](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/storage/queues/), read 2026-09-13)
- When the free offer ends: 30 days. ([source](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/storage/queues/), read 2026-09-13)
- Pricing model: Per region and per redundancy, metered on operations and on stored data; LRS, ZRS, GRS and GZRS are each priced separately. ### Infrastructure

- Uptime SLA: Not published as a web page. Microsoft consolidated its per-service SLAs into one downloadable document covering Azure, Dynamics 365, Office 365 and Intune; the former azure.microsoft.com SLA URLs now redirect to its licensing viewer. ### Queues

- Included per month: None included. Queue operations are metered from the first one at $0.004 per 10,000 Class 1 operations on LRS in East US. - Maximum message size: 64 KB per message. A queue may hold millions of messages, bounded only by the storage account's capacity rather than a queue-level ceiling. ([source](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/queues/storage-queues-introduction), read 2026-09-06)
- Message retention: 7 days by default, set per message with messagettl; since version 2017-07-29 it can be any positive number, or -1 for a message that never expires. ([source](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/api/storageservices/put-message), read 2026-09-13)
- Maximum delay: Time-to-live defaults to seven days and can be set to any positive number, or to -1 for a message that never expires — the only queue here with an unbounded option. ([source](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/queues/storage-queues-introduction), read 2026-09-06)
