# Astro on Netlify

Canonical: https://inetgeek.com/stacks/astro-on-netlify/

Netlify publishes its own guide for deploying Astro.

Content-focused framework that ships zero JavaScript by default and renders components from several UI libraries.

## What Astro needs

Every host claims to run Astro, so the claim on its own decides nothing. These are the things Astro requires from the platform underneath it, and what Netlify publishes about each. Netlify documents 3 of the 4.

| Requirement | Netlify | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Build allowance | Not documented | Astro prerenders by default, so most of the work happens at build time and the build allowance is the real constraint. |
| Concurrent builds | Personal: 1 concurrent build included, purchasable up to a maximum of 3, at $40/month per additional build | A content site rebuilds on every edit. One build slot turns a busy publishing day into a queue. |
| Edge network | Supported | A prerendered Astro site is a directory of static files. After that, the only thing left that affects speed is where they are served from. |
| Git deployment | Supported | Astro's usual workflow is a push that triggers a build. Anything else means wiring the build yourself. |

## What Netlify documents

> Astro is a framework that focuses on performance — by default, it ships zero client-side JavaScript.

### Astro features on Netlify

- **ssr_adapter**: Supported — The adapter is actively maintained by the Astro team. [...] On Netlify, on-demand rendering is powered by Netlify Functions ([source](https://docs.netlify.com/build/frameworks/framework-setup-guides/astro/))
- **image_optimization**: Supported — component automatically uses Netlify Image CDN to transform images on demand, without slowing down build times. The Image CDN also handles content negotiation to use the most efficient image format for the requesting client. ([source](https://docs.netlify.com/build/frameworks/framework-setup-guides/astro/))
- **isr**: Supported — Astro gives developers full control of caching headers with Astro.response.headers, allowing them to take advantage of Netlify's durable cache and Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR). ([source](https://docs.netlify.com/build/frameworks/framework-setup-guides/astro/))
- **edge_middleware**: Supported — middleware runs at build-time for pre-rendered pages, and on-demand for server-rendered pages. On Netlify, middleware for on-demand pages uses Netlify Edge functions behind the scenes, running on the network edge. ([source](https://docs.netlify.com/build/frameworks/framework-setup-guides/astro/))
- **zero_config_deploy**: Supported — Whether you use the adapter or not, Netlify automatically detects Astro in your project and provides a suggested build command ([source](https://docs.netlify.com/build/frameworks/framework-setup-guides/astro/))

## What it costs to run there

| | Netlify |
| --- | --- |
| Entry paid plan | $9/month for 1,000 credits/month |
| Pricing model | Monthly plan credits are included with your plan each billing cycle and reset at the start of each cycle. |
| When you exceed a cap | Suspended: when credits run out every project is paused and visitors see a Site not available page, unless auto recharge is configured. |

## Whether it suits you

Teams that want Git-driven deploys onto a global CDN with a managed Postgres database built into the same platform. The free tier is 300 credits a month with a hard limit, so spend cannot surprise you.

Consider something else if: You need to run containers or long-lived processes — Netlify does not document either.
