# WordPress on WP Engine

Canonical: https://inetgeek.com/stacks/wordpress-on-wp-engine/

WP Engine publishes its own guide for deploying WordPress.

PHP content management system that requires a database and persistent filesystem for uploads and plugins.

## What WordPress needs

Every host claims to run WordPress, so the claim on its own decides nothing. These are the things WordPress requires from the platform underneath it, and what WP Engine publishes about each. WP Engine documents 2 of the 4.

| Requirement | WP Engine | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Persistent storage | Not documented | Uploads, themes and plugins are written to disk while the site is running. A host that resets the filesystem on every deploy loses them. |
| Managed databases | Not documented | Every post, option and user lives in MySQL. Without a managed database you are running, patching and backing one up yourself. |
| Storage (entry plan) | 10 GB storage on the Essential plan at its cheapest capacity tier (1 site, 25,000 visits a month) | A media library grows steadily and is almost never pruned. Disk is the cap a WordPress site reaches first. |
| Monthly visits cap | 25,000 visits/mo on the Essential plan at its cheapest capacity tier | Managed WordPress plans meter traffic rather than CPU, so the visit ceiling is the real size of the plan you are buying. |

### WordPress features on WP Engine

- **managed_mysql**: Supported — WP Engine removed MySQL 5.7 across our platform and upgraded all websites to MySQL 8.0 in October 2023. [...] All websites on WP Engine are using MySQL 8. ([source](https://wpengine.com/support/mysql-8/))
- **staging_environment**: Supported — Environments are individual and completely separate instances of WordPress. Environments operate independently and without impacting other environments within the site. [...] Each site can have up to three environments (Production, Staging, and Development). ([source](https://wpengine.com/support/environments/))
- **object_cache**: Supported — There are two primary types of caching WP Engine servers offer: page caching and object caching. While page caching is always on by default, object caching must be enabled manually. ([source](https://wpengine.com/support/wp-engines-object-caching/))
- **automated_backups**: Supported — WP Engine has both automated and manual backups to help protect your data, removing the need for any bulky third-party application. Backups exist for all environments on WP Engine by default (Production, Staging, and Development). [...] WP Engine keeps 30 days of backups. ([source](https://wpengine.com/support/restore/))
- **wp_cli**: Supported — SSH Gateway provides secure remote access to website files and databases. Users can leverage tools like WP-CLI and MySQL command line for efficient website management. ([source](https://wpengine.com/support/ssh-gateway/))

## What it costs to run there

| | WP Engine |
| --- | --- |
| Entry paid plan | Starting at $28.00/month for the Managed Hosting Platform, quoted in USD; $336.00 if billed annually. On 14 September 2026 the same URL also served a euro-priced variant at €25.60/month, to roughly one request in eight; thirty consecutive samples on 15 September returned only the dollar-priced body, so that behaviour is recorded as observed and not as current. |
| Pricing model | Tiered subscription plans (Essential, Core, Enterprise) configured by capacity - sites, visits and storage - billed monthly or annually, with 20% off annual Essential; additional sites are $20 (USD) per month each. |
| When you exceed a cap | Not throttled or cut off; billed $2 per 1,000 extra monthly visitors |
| Regions | Google Cloud: Iowa (us-central1), South Carolina (us-east1), Montreal (northamerica-northeast1), Belgium (europe-west1), London (europe-west2), Frankfurt (europe-west3), Netherlands (europe-west4) and others; some regions carry upgraded pricing. |

## Whether it suits you

WordPress teams that deploy with Git rather than SFTP — GitPush works over SSH — and want bandwidth overages handled by a conversation rather than an automatic charge on shared plans.

Consider something else if: Scripts must finish inside 60 seconds; the execution limit can be lowered but not raised.
